Media Studies

Media Studies Curriculum Intent:
To prepare students for tomorrow’s society, encouraging them to become critical and informed consumers of the media. Exploring the power to influence, shape and define society through the use of media language, representations and products.

Media Studies Rationale:

Media Studies begins at the end of Year 9 for TMS students. The curriculum is designed to introduce a new subject and skill set that will be revisited and developed throughout their KS4 journey. The learning journey allows students to learn new skills, explore career opportunities and create original media products.

In Year 9, students will be introduced to the GCSE course and begin to familiarise themselves with subject specific language and techniques. A quiz will be given to assess their initial understanding at the end of their first half term.

In Year 10, students will begin to explore media products and analyse professional media productions including magazines, television and video games. Alongside the core learning, students will be encouraged to complete independent learning focused on media skills and software to develop their knowledge of the media world. At the end of Year 10, students will be assessed on both components of their media exam.

In Year 11, students will complete a 12 week project creating their own, original media product following a creative brief. Students will need to research, plan, produce and evaluate their products. Following their own creative process, students will continue exploring types of media and learning about the professional world of newspapers, film and radio. Students will revise all key content in preparation for their exams in the summer of Year 11.
