KS3 Curriculum Intent and Rationale

The curriculum intent of the Mathematics Department is to support the overall aims and visions for the whole school’s curriculum. The mathematics curriculum at The Mandeville School has been specifically tailored to develop the knowledge and numerical skills base of each and every student. From basic numeracy skills through to independence in problem solving, students will learn how to apply their mathematical studies to real life situations. Scientific laws of maths are explored and analysed, as is the need for the use of sound methods utilising a logical approach. In addition, students are taught multiple strategies for communicating complex conceptual ideas, a key skill which will support their learning across the curriculum.

Here at The Mandeville School we aim to develop students who not only believe in themselves but who are capable of thinking independently both within the maths classroom and further afield and who are happy to apply their finely-honed problem solving skills. With guidance initially, they will learn to be able to apply a whole host of mathematical skills to unsignposted problems. From the outset students are encouraged to become confident in their take up of risk, which prevents self-limiting outcomes. The students will develop both academic and interpersonal skills which are transferable within the modern world and will allow them access to various career and educational pathways.

The curriculum consists of a wide range of mathematical topics designed to give students the best opportunities for success at the various key stages in maths, across other subjects and their future employability. Years 7,8 and 9 focuses on the key numeracy skills required as a base for further learning whilst the upper years learn strategies for applying these skills to problem solving.

To ensure readiness for the world of work and to increase the relevance of their learning, all Key Stage 3 students will have access to designated lessons at key points during the academic year which explore maths in the world of employment and give them greater opportunities to achieve success.

KS4 Curriculum Intent and Rationale

The KS4 curriculum uses what has been learnt previously in KS3 as a foundation to build and extend upon. In KS4, the students are tested on the basic skills already acquired such as percentages, ratio, fractions etc but then are also exposed to a wide variety of worded problems where these skills need to be applied. Often these worded problems require a combination of skills in order to tackle one single question meaning students need to be well rehearsed in how to transfer their knowledge from multiple topics. The KS4 curriculum has 2 strands, foundation and higher.

The Maths Department firmly believes that learning does not stop as the student leaves the classroom. Students are regularly entered into the IMT challenge, which is a fantastic opportunity for students to pit themselves against students from across the country. Year 11s have access to tailored revision sessions which build on their in-class work allowing them to be mentored on strategies on how to succeed in their GCSE's. All year groups are set homework weekly through the online system Sparx Maths. This system allows each maths teacher to tailor the homework to each class which follows the scheme of work closely, allowing them to secure in-class learning and develop their independence in mathematical thinking, through the pre-learning or revising of topics. Additionally, the Maths Department has its own dedicated web page, which is full of recommended websites and revision resources.

Department Ambition Statement

To instil belief in students, and equip them with the knowledge, skills and processes to achieve and succeed, becoming resilient problem solvers, both within and outside the classroom.
