Curriculum Intent: MFL The Mandeville School : BELIEVE! ACHIEVE! SUCCEED!

At the Mandeville School Modern Foreign Language department, our curriculum intent is founded on the principles of belief, achievement, and success. We believe that every student has the capacity to excel in languages and broaden their horizons through cultural understanding. Our curriculum is designed to empower students to achieve their fullest potential and succeed in both academic and personal spheres.

Believe: We believe in the inherent ability of every student to learn and master foreign languages. Our curriculum fosters a growth mindset, encouraging students to embrace challenges and persist in the face of difficulties. We believe that language learning not only enhances communication skills but also promotes empathy, cultural awareness, and global citizenship.

Achieve: Our curriculum aims to equip students with the linguistic proficiency and cultural competence necessary to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world. Through engaging and interactive lessons using resources such as the Oxford Language learning systems Allez in French and Claro in Spanish, students will develop a deep understanding of language structures, vocabulary, and cultural nuances. We foster a supportive learning environment where students are encouraged to take risks, make mistakes, and learn from them, ultimately enabling them to achieve fluency and confidence in their language abilities.

Succeed: Success in language learning extends beyond the classroom. Our curriculum prepares students for success in their academic endeavours, as well as in their future careers and personal lives. By following the AQA exam board specifications at KS4 and focusing on three main themes, we ensure that students acquire the necessary skills to excel in examinations while also fostering a lifelong appreciation for languages and cultures. We believe that success is not solely measured by exam results but also by students' ability to effectively communicate, collaborate, and engage with diverse communities in an increasingly globalized world.

Broad and Balanced Curriculum: Our curriculum provides a broad and balanced approach to language learning, encompassing linguistic proficiency, cultural understanding, and intercultural competence. Through a variety of teaching methodologies, including immersive experiences, authentic materials, and technology-enhanced learning, we cater to diverse learning styles and abilities, ensuring that every student has the opportunity to excel. We offer a range of extracurricular activities, such as language clubs, cultural exchanges, and immersion trips, to further enrich students' language learning journey and broaden their horizons beyond the classroom.

In conclusion, our curriculum intent embodies the core values of belief, achievement, and success, while offering a broad and balanced curriculum that equips students with the skills, knowledge, and mindset to thrive in an ever-changing global society.

Impact MFL: Impact of the Curriculum Intent:

Enhanced Student Engagement: The curriculum intent outlined above fosters increased student engagement by promoting a belief in their own abilities and the value of language learning. Students are more likely to actively participate in lessons, take ownership of their learning, and pursue language proficiency beyond the classroom.

Improved Academic Performance: By providing a supportive learning environment and effective teaching methodologies, the curriculum intent contributes to improved academic performance. Students are better equipped to meet the requirements of the AQA exam board specifications and achieve higher grades in their language assessments.

Culturally Aware and Empathetic Students: The emphasis on cultural understanding and global citizenship cultivates students who are more culturally aware, empathetic, and respectful of diverse perspectives. They develop a deeper appreciation for other cultures and languages, contributing to a more inclusive and interconnected community.

Long-Term Language Proficiency: The curriculum intent focuses not only on exam success but also on fostering a lifelong appreciation for languages. Students are more likely to continue their language studies beyond school, leading to greater fluency and proficiency in French and Spanish.

Broadened Horizons and Opportunities: Through extracurricular activities, such as language clubs and immersion trips, students have the opportunity to broaden their horizons and explore new cultures. This exposure opens doors to international experiences, career opportunities, and meaningful connections with people from around the world.

Positive School Culture: The curriculum intent creates a positive school culture where language learning is celebrated and valued. Teachers are empowered to innovate and adapt their teaching methods to meet the needs of diverse learners, fostering a sense of collaboration and mutual respect among staff and students alike.

In summary, the impact of the curriculum intent is far-reaching, touching not only academic outcomes but also personal growth, cultural understanding, and global citizenship. By instilling a belief in students' abilities, fostering achievement, and promoting success, the Modern Foreign Language department at the Mandeville School creates a transformative learning experience that prepares students to thrive in an increasingly interconnected and multicultural world.
